While ‘Breath‘ by Andy Sarkis starring Andrew Garfield is announced as an Opening Gala at the 61st BFI London Film Festival, the ‘Battle of Sexes‘ directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, starring Steve Carell and Emma Stone is announced as the festival’s American Express Gala. The European premiere of ‘Battle of Sexes’ is scheduled for the 7th of October in Odeon Leicester Square theatre.
The film tells a story of a famous tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone), women’s world champion, and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), ex-men’s champion, that was billed as the Battle of the Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. The film is produced by Cloud Eight Films’ Christian Colson and Decibel Films’ Danny Boyle, the team behind Oscar-nominated and winning films such as 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, and Steve Jobs.
Christian Colson, producer Battle of the Sexes, said: “Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, together with our exceptional ensemble led by Emma Stone and Steve Carell, have brought Simon Beaufoy’s richly textured screenplay joyously to life and I can’t wait to share the film with my fellow Londoners at LFF.”
Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, directors Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton, and the legendary Billie Jean King are expected to attend the gala.
Twentieth Century Fox will release the film in the UK and Ireland on 24 November
